1 Rough notes of a meeting at 7 Victoria Terrace
2 8 November 2024
3 Henry S. Thompson
4
5 Present: Rachel Fitzgerald (RF), Madeleine Harding (MH), Katrina
6 McCrea (KM), John Phillips (JP), Majk Stokes (MS), Henry Thompson (HT)
7
567
8 KM welcomed us to a meeting to support Majk Stokes after the outcome
9 of the appointment process.
10
568
11
12 KM invited MS to share how he was feeling.
567
13
568
14 MS: Assistant Manager for 12 years, and Acting Manager for 4 months,
15 promotion was the obvious next step, so very disappointed.
567
16
568
17 MS: 'New perspective?' Discounts all the hard work and experience,
18 feels like this counted against me instead of being a positive
19
20 MS: Still quite raw.
567
21
568
22 MS: Long delay in reply to my email at the time was not appreciated.
567
23
568
24 MS: Signalled interest in the job at the beginning of the summer, wasn't
25 given any help at all.
567
26
27 --------
28
29 KM: Full and open procedure, equal treatment: In the end panel choose
30 more depth and breadth of experience in person management and venue
31 management.
32
568
33 KM: Giving feedback even now, panel hopes is useful going forewords.
567
34
568
35 KM: Personal feedback should have happened right away, you were owed that,
567
36 and the panel apologises.
37
568
38 RF: Absence of Majk's line manager meant the person normally responsible
567
39 for helping him wasn't there, and MC failed to step in and do that
40 job.
41
568
42 HT: As MC Convenor, my responsibiity, and I apologise for failing at
43 that.
567
44
568
45 JP: New perspective? Something the panel were looking for?
567
46
568
47 KM: No, not going in, it was something that emerged in the interview
48 process. Coming into a new situation allows new ideas. _But_ new
49 perspective wasn't the starting point, or the primary point.
567
50
568
51 KM: MS & Beth Clarke (BC) interviewed very well, but so did the other
52 candidates. We had a very hard time making the decision.
567
53
568
54 MS: still struggling to see why he and BC couldn't have done this
567
55 as well or better.
56
568
57 MS: And it now looks like I'm being pushed back to Ass't Mgr and showing
58 how everything works, that's hard to take. At the very least I should
59 continue to be paid at the higher rate
60
61 RF: Delay in panel response was bad, but it was _very_ hard to reply
62 in writing. Agreed that retaining Acting Manager pay for the first
63 month is a reasonable request.
567
64
568
65 KM: Looking Forward
567
66
568
67 MS: The fact that Miranda changed to my not being paid for lunch break
68 means I'm very nearly working a full week
567
69
568
70 MS: I would like to go down to a two-day week. Maybe after three
71 months of helping new managers settle in? Start in January would be
567
72 better?
73
568
74 MS: I'd like to have a more environmental or creative focus:
75 * recycling/energy efficiency aspect perhaps
76 * C-venues were a mess, they don't learn from their mistakes,
77 Greenside would have been a better bet, make my job more about
78 planning for and managing "Venue 40", that would be much more
79 satisfying. That's obviously a whole conversation to be had.
567
80
568
81 MS: So having a project, taking the lead on something, for example V40 or
567
82 environmental, that would be great.
83
84 RF: New managers would be really excited to hear that.
85
568
86 RF: Easy to lose sight of the environmental stuff, so having someone
87 actually pushing that on staff will be good. Also this is a great time
88 to get that going.
89
90 RF: Sabbatical? Certainly possible.
91
92 JP: Beth's thoughts?
567
93
568
94 MS: Not the historical connection with the Meeting that I had, so not
95 the same emotional investment. Mostly angry on Majk's behalf. Would
96 have found ways to do the job well.
567
97
568
98 MS: Not here today because this meeting is for Majk, looking at other
99 avenues for new work.
567
100
568
101 [Beth not interested in pursuing a casual job at the Meeting House]
567
102
568
103 KM: Wrapping up:
104
105 * There's an open door for further discussion.
567
106
568
107 * MS will provide induction for new Managers for period of up to 3 months
567
108
568
109 MS requests
567
110
568
111 * Continue at current Acting Manager pay rate during induction
112
113 * Then go down to 2 days
567
114
568
115 * Be considered for sabbatical later in 2025/6
567
116
568
117 MC will get back to MS on this ASAP.
118
119 MS will let S&A know that he applied for the job, but has no animus
567
120 towards them personally.
121
568
122 JP&MH are happy to continue to support MS.
567
