Paper from Phil Lucas

HST circulated a paper with some thoughts from PL

AB reminded us that we must bear in mind that all the input we've had is from
individual perspectives, on a very complex multi-faceted problem, and it is not
surprising that the perspectives are not entirely consistent with one another.
Furthermore, those inconsistencies should not be 'blamed' on individuals.

We were left uncertain just what it would mean if we were, or were not, a "Quaker
Centre". Not all QCs are residential, if we understand KJ's contributions last time.
We are by far the largest Quaker premises in Scotland. 7VT is evidently not just a
place which is primarily used for Meeting for Worship, and committee meetings.

The question of why we don't have outside signage arose. When the terrace
re-opens through to G-IV bridge, we should certainly try to get something put there
again, with less uncertain orientation than the previous one.

How far can we go with sitting lightly to the full force of the health and
safety, fire, food hygiene advice and/or regulations? AB has suggested to the Clerk of
AM that we need a threshing meeting at AM level to air all the issues around the
regulations. We believe that Trustees have asked John Phillips to write a report on
this. Our testimony to truth and integrity can be a burden as well as a blessing.

Does the cooking regulation watershed apply <emph>only</emph> if food is sold, as
opposed to being made available to the group which also does the cooking? Is Fabric
and Maintenance likely to know the answer? Tom Nisbet? Ken Jobling?

Envisaging futures

Brainstorming

 <list>

Day-time letting only?

Quaker Centre?

Full-service Rain Forest cafe?

Quaker presence?

Eliminate regular bookings in favour of blocks?

A Quaker-only centre?

Move out of town?

Primarily seen as a physical resource for the AM, with other activities complementing that

Simplify things? Reduce the kitchen to hot-drinks only?

Being open to young Quaker groups?

Doing (whatever we do) in <emph>our own space</emph>

Being a base for outreach?

Provide courses for Quakers (and non-Quakers) -- Quaker Quest all year round

Move kitchen to ground-floor, replacing office/Bow room, and make the
foyer a real cafe [new from Anthony Buxton via HST after the meeting]

 </list>

Central Edinburgh LM has come to be very dependent on an attractive (that is,
including hot soup) lunch -- what impact on that would the reduced kitchen option(s) make?

Again, does our particular situation mean that health and safety regulations
apply fully or not when we have a youth group?

How well 'advertised' are the resources we already have here? Different answers
for different kinds of resources. . . Where does this fit in? Windows?

Actions

HST to get the Kath Russell report, and some letting evaluation
forms, say from 4Q2008, and circulate. Also ask if any summary or collation has been done.

HST to ask Ken Jobling where to find the details of how food hygiene regulations
apply depending on exactly what's happening.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be at 7 Victoria Terrace at 7:30pm on Sunday 8 March. We
tentatively agreed on 23 March for our next meeting after that.
